Compassion – are you a ‘people’ person?

All our managers agree that this is one of the top traits they see in their best staff.

‘The staff are very compassionate and caring which is a must for this line of work. They have an understanding of others’ emotions.’ Michelle

‘They need to be kind and compassionate, be able to really listen and want the very best for the people they support.’ Mandy

‘Compassion and empathy is important – the ability to stand side by side with someone.’ Stuart

Experience and training in social care – do you need this to apply?

Arriving with experience is not important, say our managers – you will gain training and experience with Livability, if you’re right for the job.

‘We have a mix of staff – some come qualified, others with no care experience at all, like Louise and Wendy, who are outstanding members of my team. You can have qualifications coming out of your ears but if you’re not a people person, qualifications don’t get you very far.’ Helen

‘The majority of staff in my services have come from a local college with very little or no experience.’ Michelle

‘About 70 per cent of our staff are new to social care when they join us. I look for common sense, life experience and initiative, and the right attitude.’ Mandy
