Olympus KeyMed smash fundraising target for local Livability care home
The long-standing supporter of Livability decided to fundraise for local care home Dolphin Court as part of the Home Design Appeal and raised £72,000 over the last year.
Having raised £40,000 for Cancer Research the previous year, Olympus KeyMed’s committee set themselves a target of £60,000 and started fundraising in March 2014 for Dolphin Court, which needs to upgrade 12 of its kitchens for its residents.
Staff members took part in the London Marathon, and a big charity ball to kick-start a year of fantastic events from skydives, bubble football, superhero runs, bake sales, wheelchair basketball, Christmas fair and Managing Director Nick Williams even raffled off a ride in his sports car.
Staff were also sponsored to spend half a day in a wheelchair on International Disability Day to raise awareness of disability and its challenges.
Back in 2013, the company took part in Livability’s LET ME WORK Week, which called on companies to open their doors to disabled people and offer a week’s work experience. KeyMed signed up straight away.
Chris Yeates, a wheelchair user who acquired his disability following a car accident, took part in the week and worked in various departments gaining experience and making friends along the way. When a job opening came up in the Customer Services department, Chris applied for the role and was the successful candidate.
KeyMed has been a supporter of Livability and its local Southend homes for many years. Work has already started on updating the kitchens at Dolphin Court, with three recently completed. Most of the money raised will go towards the work at Dolphin Court with the rest being used to benefit Livability’s other works and projects.
The committee celebrated their achievements with a special afternoon tea at Dolphin Court last Friday, and was a great opportunity for Livability to thank them for all their hard work and for them to meet with residents who will be enjoying the new independence and freedom the new kitchens will offer them.
Livability is always keen to hear from companies who would like to see the direct impact they can make to the lives of disabled adults and children. If your company would like to get involved, please contact our Corporate Manager, Anna-Maria Mullen, on AMariaMullen@livability.org.uk or 020 7452 2057.
