Livability Brookside celebrate their first ever wedding at the service

The staff and service users at Livability Brookside, a residential service in Edgware, North London, were delighted to celebrate the recent wedding of two of their service users: Debby and Peter.

Debby first met Peter when they were residents at a care home in Hertfordshire. Their friendship developed over time and they became a couple six years ago. Debby’s parents, Joan and Leslie, visit the couple almost every day. ‘They really complement one another,’ Leslie told us. ‘They share the same sense of humour.’

When their previous home closed its doors, the couple were worried they would be separated. ‘All they wanted was to stay together,’ says Leslie.

Fortunately, Brookside was able to step in and offer them a home. Even better, they found the couple flats right opposite each other. Their relationship went from strength to strength and this year they decided to get married.

The couple planned the wedding and reception themselves, with support from service manager, Diane, and key workers: Theo, Emma, Eleri and Caroline. Emma’s niece, Chrystal, offered her services as official photographer.

‘We helped Debby find the dress of her dreams – a beautiful white tulle full-length gown with an embroidered bodice,’ Diane explained. ‘We organised a dress fitting with her to make sure the dress was the perfect fit.’

As the bride, Debby wanted all the ‘extras’ so that her day was as perfect as possible. ‘We went down the full traditional route with a stunning tiara and amazing flowers arranged by a friend of a member of staff,’ Diane told us. As a finishing touch, Debby wore a white fur cape around her shoulders – adding a touch of glamour her outfit.

Peter was also very smart in a lovely navy-blue suit and the flowers in his button hole – including lily of the valley – matched Debby’s bouquet. The couple looked the picture of happiness on the day.

Following a traditional wedding service in church, the couple came back to Brookside for the reception, which included a white wedding cake and bubbly, for family, friends, service users and staff. Music was provided by fellow resident Phil, who acted as DJ, creating the perfect party atmosphere.

Staff had given their time outside work to help with preparations, including Dee, the cook, who came in on her day off to prepare a delicious wedding breakfast.

Peter’s parents, Rob and Peg, and his family and friends were also there to celebrate and toast the happy couple. They took time to thank everyone involved for making the day so special.

‘Debby and Peter were really moved by all the help they were given organising their wedding.’ Diane told us. ‘They are now planning their honeymoon for next spring and are really keen to go somewhere hot. Until then, they will start their married life together in a new shared flat at Brookside.

‘They have never been happier,’ Leslie told us. ‘They are really looking forward to the future together. I am so excited for them.’ As proud parents, Leslie and Joan were delighted to be able to share Debby and Peter’s wedding day with their family and friends. They told us, ‘At Livability, everything is possible!’
