York House fundraisers take on Three Peaks challenge

July 17 2012

Brave fundraisers Keith Hodgkin and Chris Davis took on the Three Peaks Challenge on 7th July to raise funds for York House, the Ossett care home where Keith’s sister Sarah lives. So far Keith and Chris have raised almost £800, which will go towards helping to support disabled residents.

width=The challenge met a rocky start.  Bad weather and flooding the day before the event meant that the duo only reached the site at 10:45pm and spent the next hour putting a tent up in the dark!

Keith and Chris started their Trek at 7:00am on Saturday morning, reaching the first peak by 8:20am. A nice downhill section and a wade through ankle deep water took them to the start of the next peak climb, 7 miles further on the route.  This was a long climb that took around an hour and a half to complete and they finally reached the second peak at around 1:30pm. The next phase was a steep downhill descent then straight into the final climb, where they finally reached the third peak at 4:30pm.  All that was left was the final 4 mile trek back to the start, where they arrived at 6:30pm – completing the route in a total time of 11 hours and 40 minutes.

The Yorkshire three peaks are: Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

The motivation for taking on this challenge was seeing what York House can do to help residents with a little extra money.

Keith said: “At York House my sister Sarah has access to clubs and groups that as a family we would struggle to maintain, giving her a more independent lifestyle.  If what we did can help all residents have anything that would otherwise have been unavailable – our goal will have been achieved.”

York House prides itself on its friendly community atmosphere and offers complete 24-hour care of the highest quality. The home caters for up to 20 people aged 18-65 with very complex needs and varying degrees of disabilities.
