The Livability difference
New manager Viren Vythilingum joined Livability from the commercial sector, his first experience of working with a disability charity. He manages Livability Anvil House, a residential home for adults with profound cognivitive disabilities. Viren tells us why he thinks Livability services provide something special for the people we support.
How long have you worked in care, Viren?
About 15 years, mainly in private care homes.
What was your first impression when you arrived at Livability Anvil House?
What really impressed me was how homely and friendly it felt – it’s more like a family home for the people who live here. The staff are great here and I think a big plus for residents is the continuity of care.
What difference does that make?
Because many staff have been here a long time, they very much understand people’s needs. People here have very limited communication but they really trust the staff and feel confident with them. So if someone isn’t feeling very well, they may not be able to communicate that much at all, but staff know pretty quickly and can help.
How do you ensure people are living well when they have limited communication abilities?
People’s wellbeing is very important to us. My experience of Livability is that the people we support are at the centre of all decision-making. We work with them at their pace to make sure we meet their needs. You can see people are happy because the staff have a little joke with them, or interact over something as simple as supporting them to make a cup of tea. But it goes further than just making people happy – it’s making life as good as it can be. Staff here think outside the box and are proactive in trying different things to see what people really enjoy, and they make sure people get out.
What do you think is key in providing a high standard of care?
Well, like any organisation or business, Livability needs to balance the books, but that pressure is balanced with other factors. I think it’s because Livability has the right values and has recruited staff with the right values to deliver the care.Consider a career with Livability
