Welcoming the gift of others this Christmas – a Christmas reflection from Livability
“Here is the little door, lift up the latch, oh lift!
We need not wander more – but enter with our gift.”
These words from this lesser known carol describe the profound and deep call of Christmas. Every man, woman and child is invited to bring their gift in celebration of the birth of Christ.
For some these are gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. For others, they are the lowly cattle from fields and flocks. But every gift is welcomed and they all have a part to play in the community of the Christmas story.
At Livability we are inspired by this Christian hope. We know that communities and lives are richer when everyone can share their gift – it all adds up.
Yet we know that for many people in our society – who face isolation and loneliness – the opportunity to share their gift is so often restricted.
As we celebrate the gift of Christ to the world this Christmas, may we be inspired to recognise and value the gifts we see in one another.
May we also be challenged to fight the injustice of isolation and change the face of loneliness in our communities UK-wide.
